Cookson's principal indicators of occupational safety and health performance are based on US Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) recording requirements. For the past nine years, Cookson operations world-wide have reported the "days away" incident rate - the number of work-related illnesses or injuries, per 100 employees, that resulted in an employee being absent from work for at least one day. In 2002, we also began tracking the "recordable" incident rate - the number of work-related injuries and illnesses, per 100 employees, that resulted in medical treatment beyond first aid. Using these same incident rates worldwide allows us to compare facilities in different countries.
Cookson's "days away" injury and illness rate has improved steadily since the company began tracking such incidents on a global basis in 1999. The Group-wide "days away" incident rate has fallen from 4.1 in 1999 to 1.4 in 2008. The Group's "recordable" incident rate has shown a similar trend, improving to 1.9 in 2008.
