Group Management of HS&E
Cookson regards HS&E matters as mainstream management responsibilities. The Board has overall responsibility for the Cookson HS&E Policy and for monitoring its implementation. Executives and line managers at all levels are directly responsible through the normal management structure for HS&E matters in the operations under their control. Each of Cookson's Divisions has an executive committee member with specific responsibility for HS&E matters and every major business within each division has a nominated senior executive with specific responsibility for monitoring HS&E performance.
A reporting system is in place to collect details of all HS&E related incidents throughout the group and to produce quarterly reports including key performance indicators (KPIs) covering work related injury and illness rates. These quarterly reports and related performance improvement plans are regularly reviewed by the Chief Executive with divisional management as part of the normal business review cycle.
The Board reviews HS&E performance as a formal agenda item at least once per year and any significant developments are reported to the Chief Executive and the Board as they occur.

Certified Management Systems
During 2008, the number of Cookson locations with certification to ISO 14001, the international standard for environmental management systems, and OHSAS 18001, the standard for health and safety management systems, increased, principally as a result of the Foseco acquisition. The Group now has 60 locations certified to ISO 14001 and 29 locations certified to OHSAS 18001.
However, certification to international standards such as ISO 14001 is not appropriate for all facilities, particularly smaller ones and those with restricted environmental impact.
